A former Tonga Under-18 lock forward from Vava’u, Vaea Fifita, made his debut for the Wellington Lions last night in New Zealand’s provincial rugby competition, the ITM Cup.
It was announced last week that the 21 year-old Neiafu boy would be included in the Wellington Lions starting-line up in its fixture against North Harbour played in Wellington last night. It was a winning experience for Fifita in the Number 8 jersey, as his team edged out North Harbour 32 - 27 in a close encounter.
The Super 15 prospect has been steadily building a rugby career since he was offered a scholarship in 2010 to attend Tamaki College in Auckland. The scholarship was a result of Fifita’s impressive performance in the Tonga Under-18s.
Fifita is also a product of the prestigious International Rugby Academy of New Zealand and has since been playing for lower-grade teams in Wellington. A successful season with his club the “Wellington Axemen” this year has now paid off with his selection in the Wellington Lion’s line-up against North Harbour.
