Digicel Tonga's mobile money service received one of two awards won by Digicel in the Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2013, announced in London, United Kingdom on June 5.
The Tonga operation won an award in the “Best Consumer Innovation” category for their ‘Beep & Go’ mobile payments product, while the Chairman and founder of Digicel, Denis O’Brien, took home the big prize of the night the “Outstanding Achievement Award”.
Digicel Tonga stated that ‘Beep & Go’ is the world’s first fully inclusive payment solution linking a near field communication (NFC) point of sale terminal to a mobile money wallet. "Since launching it has driven a 30% increase in unique users of Digicel’s Mobile Money services in Tonga."
Commenting on the awards, Digicel Chairman and founder, Denis O’Brien, said; “I would like to congratulate my colleagues in the Pacific for bringing that to life for our customers through the ‘Beep & Go’ product which won in the ‘Best Consumer Innovation’ category. To be recognised on the global stage at being the best at what we do is no small achievement and we are grateful for that honour. I would also like to thank the team at Global Telecoms Business for my own award. I am deeply grateful and accept this on behalf of my colleagues all across the globe.”
Global Telecoms is a business magazine for the telecommunications industry, and the annual awards are attended by industry leaders from around the world. Awards are for projects, not products, designed to celebrate collaboration between operators and vendors.
