Although the Nuku'alofa Central Business District project has been handed over to the Government of Tonga, a 12-months period binds the contractor to fix any fault identified by property owners.
The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) will remain in Tonga for 12 months after the handover of the reconstruction work, in order to take care of any defects or faults under a Defects Liability Period that began on July 1.
Dr Taukei 'Ahomana the Employer Representative at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, told Matangi Tonga that any faulty materials and workmanship that may be discovered by owners after they take over their properties, would have to be fixed by CCECC.
"But the Defects Liability Period shall not be extended by more than two years," he said.
Dr Taukei said provided that all remedial works were carried out according to the contract within the defects period, the contractor is released from its contractual obligations.
