IT has come to our attention that there is confusion amongst members of the public regarding the respective roles of Tonga Power Limited and the Electricity Commission. Tonga Power Limited wishes to take this opportunity to clear up any such confusion.
Tonga Power Limited and the Electricity Commission are separate organisations. They do not share the same management or functions. Tonga Power Limited is responsible for the generation and supply of electricity throughout Tonga. The sole function of the Electricity Commission is to regulate the tariff for the supply of electricity in the Kingdom and ensure compliance within the industry. David Wright is the Chairman of the Tonga Power Limited Board of Directors with Peter McGill the CEO reporting directly to him. The Electricity Commission has no relationship with Tonga Power Limited other than through a Concession Agreement which is the mechanism for regulation and enforcement of the electricity tariffs.
Lord Dalgety is the Chairman of the Electricity Commission.
The price charged to consumers by Tonga Power Limited for the generation and supply of electricity is driven primarily by the price of diesel. Fluctuations in worldwide diesel prices directly affects the price of electricity in Tonga. While the Electricity Commission determines the price of electricity in Tonga, this is directly controlled by the cost of diesel. Tonga Power Limited welcomes transparency in the process of determining and regulating the price of electricity in Tonga. Landed Diesel Cost ‐ Tongatapu
