WITH a theme of "Early Detection and Treatment Saves Lives" Pink October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was launched in Nuku'alofa on October 1.
Dr 'Ana 'Akau'ola told supporters of the Tonga Breast Cancer Society that after the awareness programme last year she had seen two people with lumps that had turned out to be cancer. "They were treated and I hope they are cured," she said.
In launching Pink October, the treasurer of the society Christine 'Uta'atu called on women to wear pink clothing on Fridays this month to promote the awareness. The society has prepared a Tongan language card that shows women how to self-examine their breasts and underarm areas for any signs of lumps.
Pink October activities include a Pasikala Nuku'alofa "Pink" bike ride on October 2. Open registration starts at 7:00 am at the Nuku'alofa Bus station area on Vuna Road.
An annual Awarenees Walk will be held on October 30 starting at 8:00 am from the Male'e Maamaloa (Akoteu) and everyone is welcome, said Christine.
The launch and Pink morning tea at the FWC Moulton Hall, was attended by the society's Patron Hon. Lupepau'u Tuita and the President Hon. Fredrika Fatafehi-'o-Lapaha Tuita.
