POLICE arrested a male supporter of a candidate for the coming parliamentary election in Vava'u on November 12, after it was alleged that election posters in Neiafu carried defamatory information about another candidate.
Police Commander Chris Kelley, in his weekly Crime Report program this morning in Nuku'alofa said, however, that no charges had been laid. But police were still investigating the matter and their findings would be reported to the Electoral Commission.
The Police Commander said that on Friday, November 12 police in Neiafu received a complaint from a candidate that another candidate and his supporters were displaying posters in Neiafu with defamatory information.
Last week, the Commander also received complaints of personal tensions between two candidates in Tongatapu but no violence was involved.
Election watch
With only eight days left until Election Day on November 25, the police are keeping watchful eye on proceedings in the electorates.
"I want to ensure the public there is no evidence of any planned disruption on Election Day, and it would be a routine election process for people to go to the polls and cast their votes peacefully," said Commander Kelley.
