The Tongan community has donated $22,887 pa'anga toward the Asian Tsunami relief fund, following a fund raising effort over the last month.
A cheque for the amount was presented by Laumanu Petelo of the Tonga Broadcasting Commission to the Hon. Alaileula Tuku'aho, the patron of the Tonga Red Cross on February 3.
Sione Taumoefolau, the Secretary General of the Tonga Red Cross, said financial contributions had been made to the Red Cross Office over the weeks since the Tsunami by private businesses, commercial banks, and churches, and the fund was boosted with the help of Tonga Broadcasting Commission during the past week after a special live radio and telecast appeal.
Sione said that the funds will be sent to Geneva on Monday February 7.
It is the second donation from Tonga for Tsunami relief. The Government of Tonga in early January approved a US$65,000 financial assistance towards Asian Governments that were devastated by the December tsunami.
