After 17 nights of camping in tents outside the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia Ltd. office at Queen Salote Wharf, anticipating news of relatives in the August 5 sinking of the MV Princess Ashika, bereaved families put closure to the hope of recovery and returned home on Friday July 21.
The SCP board members and staff held a special prayer service and luncheon for the families to remember the lives lost at sea. It was attended by SCP Chairman 'Alisi Taumoepeau, Managing Director John Jonesse, board member Lord Dalgety, Rev 'Aisea Kava, and Rev Graham Cruickshank of Whangarei, New Zealand, with over 40 bereaved family members.
'Alisi, on behalf of the captain and crew, extended condolences to all of the families affected by the tragedy.
"I know the pain and grief remains with all families affected and we feel the same. So today is important because since the tragedy struck we have had nights of tears, pain and sorrow and it was a difficult journey. At the same time that road has been full of grace because of the love and prayers shared on this site," she added.
