Following severe floods that have devastated parts of Fiji this week, ADB has expressed deepest sympathy for the people of Fiji who have lost family and friends in the disaster.
"As well as concern about the loss of life and damage to property and infrastructure, the wider socio-economic impact of the flooding could be very significant," says Keith Leonard, Regional Director of ADB's South Pacific Subregional Office in Fiji. "The floods add to a series of economic shocks experienced by the Pacific region which includes the surge of high food and fuel prices in 2008, and the ongoing global financial crisis."
ADB is closely monitoring the flood situation and has indicated a willingness to work with other partners in helping the Fiji Government conduct a damage and needs assessment of the affected areas. ADB, 15/01/09.
