A Tropical Cyclone Alert has been cancelled for central and southern Tonga as Tropical Cyclone Daman has weakened overnight and is expected to curve southwest away from Tonga today.
A strong wind warning remains in force for all Tongan waters.
The National Weather Forecaster at Fua'amotu at 3:00 am today, Sunday, said Daman was moving southeast at 8 knots. Close to its centre it is estimated to have average winds up to 60 knots decreasing to 40 knots in the next 12 to 24 hours.
The forecast for Tonga to midnight Sunday is for moderate to fresh east to northeast winds, strong and gusty at times. Cloudy with occasional rain, heavy at times, and a few isolated thunderstorms.
Nadi
According to a Special Weather Bulletin No. Two for Tonga issued by the RSMC Nadi Tropical Cyclone Centre, at 0530 UTC December 8, Daman had weakened and was expected to curve towards the southwest within the next 24 hours.
"It therefore no longer poses any direct threat to central and southern Tonga."
No further special weather bulletins will be issued from Nadi unless the system recurves and approaches Tonga.
