Canadian archaeology students study early Vava'u settlements [1]

Prof. David V. Burley, with 17 students and an assistant from the Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada, visiting Tonga in June destined for Vava'u to carry out some excavation work to ascertain the first settlement of Vava'u by ancient Tongans.
Professor David Burley is no stranger to Tonga, and has done a lot of archaeological work in Tonga on Lapita Pottery. He staged the most comprehensive exhibition ever on Lapita Pottery in Tonga at the Tongan National Museum in November 2001.
David said that the students, ranging in age from 20 to 25 were studying for their Bachelor of Arts Degree in Archaeology but they were in Tonga to carry out practical tasks for their course study, on the History of Tonga. The group expected to return home on July 22.
