The Republic of Fiji will hold a Parliamentary Election during the first quarter of 2009, Commodore Frank Bainimarama told Pacific Forum leaders in Neiafu, Vava'u this morning.
Frank Bainimarama also told Forum Leaders that he and the Royal Fijian Military Force RFMF will accept the outcome of the 2009 elections.
The Chairman of the Pacific Forum Leaders meeting, Hon. Dr Feleti Sevele said in a Press Statement today that Pacific Leaders welcomed the undertaking by Bainimarama and called on the Fijian Interim Government to work with the Forum-Joint Working Group to produce a credible roadmap to the election in accordance with the constitution and the law of Fiji.
The Pacific Leaders also called for a meeting of the Forum Foreign Ministers in January next year to review the progress being made towards the election in the first quarter of 2009.
It appears that the Fijian issue was high in the agenda of the Pacific Leaders' retreat since it was the only issue mentioned in a special news dispatch from Vava'u today.
The Pacific Leaders will return to Nuku'alofa tomorrow morning.
