Tonga strengthens cooperation with India [1]

Bilateral relations between the Governments of Tonga and India were strengthened in a meeting between the Hon. Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Tonga, Hon. S. Tu'a Taumoepeau Tupou and the High Commissioner of the Government of India to London, His Excellency Mr. Kamalesh Sharma, at India House in London on Friday 25 May 2007. The meeting confirmed opportunities for further development cooperation between the two countries including:
- The Government of India Export-Import Bank which can extend concessional finance to promote export and imports between India and Tonga;
- Willingness of the Government of India to provide, on a bilateral basis, technical assistance to the Government of Tonga in the form of an expert on Information Technology. Also, possible assistance in the areas of technology transfer for coconut related products through CRTFA and other technical cooperation including short-term training courses in India;
- The Government of India also channel funding assistance to provide technical assistance for private sector development through the South Pacific Project Facility (SPPF).
- Other bilateral assistance from India where India has the capacity to help upon request from the Government of Tonga.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs was accompanied by Mr. 'Aisake Eke, Secretary for Finance and Planning, Ms. Odette Tupouohomohema, Assistance Secretary and EU Desk Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the First Secretary at the Tonga High Commission in London, Ms. Sela Moeangangongo.
