Road death at Ha’ateiho [1]

A 21-year-old male pedestrian died on Sunday, September 24 after being hit on Taufa’ahau Road in Ha’ateiho, on Saturday.
Acting District Commander at the Central Police Station, Sisi Tonga said today a 49-year-old man from Vaini/Kolofo’ou has been arrested and charged with reckless driving causing the death.
The accident occurred at around 11:40pm on Saturday, September 23. The accused was driving a rental car heading west on Taufa’ahau Road, when he allegedly hit the victim who was walking beside road.
"He did not stop to ascertain injury or death. He only stopped at Tofoa and contacted police about the fatal accident," said ADC Tonga.
Members from the Ha’ateiho Community Patrol Volunteers found the victim who was rushed to Vaiola Hospital. He passed away at around 10:00am.
“Accidents like this are preventable and we all need to do our part to reduce deaths and injuries on our roads.”
This is the second road fatality so far this year, compared to 18 recorded in 2016.
The accused remains in custody.
