American cultural and educational documentaries for public screening will be showcased in Tonga between 8-11 September in Nuku’alofa, organized by a group from the American Embassy in Suva, Fiji.
Part of the team is American documentary film maker Robert Hurst showing his film the “Listeners”, a feature length documentary exploring suicide hotlines and the volunteers who answer calls. He hopes it sends a message to viewers on the issue surrounding suicide.
Robert conducted a Masterclass of Creative Arts and Media on film making and documentaries attended by media students from various local organisations.
The U.S Embassy’s Regional Public Affairs Officer, Dmitri Tarakhovsky said “the purpose of this program is to reach out through film to different cultures to strengthen people connection and mutual understandings by maintaining dialogues on these important issues.”
He hopes it “engages people in discussions on environmental climate and protection, human empowerment, domestic violence and more.”
The final Public film screening on Monday will be held at the Arts Space in Fasi.
