Folaha residents celebrated having access to clean water thanks to a Japanese Government project that has upgraded their deteriorating water supply system
Japan’s Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Yukio Numata handed over the new system on 5 September.
“We recognize the fact that access to clean and plentiful water is vital for human’s everyday life and its scarcity poses danger over the community, leading to many problems such as severe health issues,” he said.
The USD$81,388.00 upgrade, funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects, includes the installation of a new solar power water pump unit set, a new tank stand, a new water tank (5,000 gallon) and a fence around the solar and pump house systems.
Mr Numata said Japan’s aid “contributes to efforts on improving social well-being and basic human needs”.
Hon. Penisimani Fifita, Minister for Education and Training thanked the Japanese Government for their generosity and said the water supply system would provide better living standards for Folaha residents.
“The equipment will certainly help improve the reliability of the village’s water supply system as well as the quality of the water, which will contribute significantly towards improving the health of the community in a sustainable way.”
