Five waste management vehicles gifted by the Government of Japan will be used by Waste Authority Ltd. to extend its services in the outer islands of Vava'u and Ha'apai.
A grant contract was signed between Japanese Ambassador HE Mr Yukio Numata and Waste Authority Ltd CEO Malakai Sika on Tuesday, June 27 in Nuku'alofa.
The vehicles are expected to arrive in Tonga later this year. Four vehicles will be used in Vava'u, including two collection waste vehicles, one dump truck, and one septic truck, while one waste collection vehicle will go to Ha’apai.
The Ambassador said this project will contribute to the efforts of the Government of Tonga in its Strategic Development Framework of 2015-25, ensuring there is cleaner environment and less pollution from households and business activities, while building on improved waste management, minimization and recycling, making conditions safer, healthier and more pleasant for residents and visitors.
This is a combined effort of the Government of Tonga, Governors of Vava’u and Ha’apai, JICA-Tonga Office and local governments and organizations of Kochi-city, Mino-city, Shimotsuma-city and Hanno Seiso Centre in Japan that donated the waste collection vehicles to Waste Authority Ltd., through the Society of Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy.
Sika said Waste Authority Ltd. sought Japan's assistance and could now extend and deliver their services in a most effective manner to Vava’u and Ha’apai.
The project was granted USD$107,491 under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project.
