Clearing work for Popua golf course continues [1]

The clearing process of the area to construct an 18-holes new Popua Golf course is currently underway for the 2019 Pacific Games.
A spokesperson from the Sports Division at the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed to Matangi Tonga that the Government of Tonga is doing the clearing work with the civil work to start later of club houses.
There will also be reclaiming work done at this area.
He said the target is for the golf course to be completed in December next year.
A designer is in Tonga to look at the master plan design and cost. With an environmental Impact assessment to be submitted to Government, he said.
The golf course was reported to cost between $12 million to $18 million pa’anga.
The Prime Minister had initially told Parliament that he is building a canal through the swamp to an island nearby where a 18-holes golf course will be build for the 2019 Pacific Games.
The construction of this 160 acres in this swampy area, will be carried out once the plan is drawn up.
The area was once the location of the Tu'i Tonga's mala'e and an important heritage area containing a a star-shaped complex of sia with interconnected walkways, that has been over-run by the development.
