Father of six, Joseph Finau, is becoming a role model for obese Pacific Islanders after losing an incredible 100 kilos in two years. Finau who lives in South Auckland, New Zealand, weighed 220kg in 2014.
Joseph told local media that he was in "bad state" after he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013 and after his wife died in 2014.
"My whole family has type two diabetes. I had to change my lifestyle" he told Stuff News.
Finau began the change in 2014 and credited a low-carb diet and self motivation to his weight loss.
"Everywhere you look it's just low carbs." he said.
"At 5:30am I do my mindfulness reading and listen to motivational music. That's my fuel for the morning."
"Then, I do my cardio and work out using resistance bands. I also work on my upper body."
Finau said that food needed to be treated like medicine,
"They're putting all that weight on themselves. What they need to do is take that person from the bottom and put him on top".
He stressed that Pacific Islanders needed to priotirize themselves away from the burdens of family and finances.
"As Pacific Islanders, we are taught that we are diabetics and this is our life," he said.
"Food is medicine. If you need to take your meds three times a day, eat your food three times a day."
