Mate Ma'a Tonga and Cronulla Shark's frontrower Andrew Fifita has been fined $20,000 (AUD) by the NRL as punishment for his on-field support of convicted killer Kieran Loveridge. The fine comes a week after Andrew was given a notice of breach with five-days to respond by the NRL.
An NRL spokesman stated yesterday "It has been decided to impose a fine of $20,000. ...Our competition cannot be used as a platform to promote inappropriate causes such as this."
Andrew sparked controversy the year when he wore an armband with the initials "FKL" (For Kieran Loveridge) during several NRL games this year. Kieran, a longtime friend of Andrew Fifita, is currently serving a 10-year jail sentence for sucker punching to death an 18-year-old Thomas Kelly in 2012 in Sydney. Fifita publicly aplogized to the family of Thomas Kelly in September.
