42 arrests for drunkenness over weekend [1]

Forty-two people were arrested and charged for alleged drunk driving and disorderly conduct mainly in central Nuku’alofa last weekend, the sixth week of Operation Safe Streets that aimed to prevent alcohol-related crimes in Tongatapu.
Tonga Police reported that the number of arrests made from September 2-4 increased by one person from the 41 persons arrested the previous weekend.
Deputy Commissioner Pelenatita Fe’ao Vaisuai said today that the police will continue with Operation Safe Streets during the coming weekends.
She said police officers would remain visible in targeted main areas of the Central Business District during the weekends.
The operation which began in July, has arrested more than 400 people for drunk driving, disorderly conduct and drinking alcohol in public places.
