"Selfish driving" causes death and injury at Veitongo [1]

A one-year old baby boy who fell from the back of an open van during a collision at Veitongo, died from his injuries on Sunday morning 14 August at Vaiola Hospital.
The baby was a passenger with his parents in the back of the van, which was in a collision with a BMW car, on Saturday night at Veitongo.
Tonga Police said today the baby’s parents and the male driver of the BMW remained in a critical condition at the hospital.
The baby was one eight passengers at the back of the open van. The van was heading east on Taufa’ahau Road, when the BMW collided with them after it tried to overtake two vehicles in front at around 11:05pm on Saturday night, 13 August.
The van driver, a 58 year old man from Ha’akame, and eight passengers including the baby, his parents and five other children were rushed to the hospital, along with the BMW driver.
The five children and their driver were released after they were treated for minor injuries.

Police Commissioner Stephen Caldwell commented that a one-year-old baby boy has had his life robbed because of the selfish actions of a driver.
Police are investigating and charges are likely to be laid.
