The building of a 1.3MW wind power generation system is possible for Tonga following a preparatory survey by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted from June 29 to July 15.
The JICA survey follows a request from the Tongan Government to Japan to implement wind power generation systems.
The survey is expected to continue in August and December this year with the hope for finalization of all documents for submission to Japan’s Cabinet for a final decision on the project proposal in May next year. The Tonga government will also confirm land issues, road and duty exemptions.
JICA has previously contributed toward Tonga’s Energy Road Map. Their projects included the installation of a 1MW micro-grid controller system and solar PV in 2015 and solar home systems for the outer islands.
The survey team was led by the Director for Energy and Mining group, Mr Fuyuki Sagara, Mr Yamato Kawamata, Ms Yumi Nakgawa (JICA headquarters) and a Consultation team from Kokusai Kogyo Co. Ltd.
Only July 14 JICA signed the Minutes of Discussion with the Government of Tonga on the Preparatory Survey for the Project on the installation of wind power generation system for Tongatapu. The Tongan signatories are Ministry of Public Enterprises, MEIDECC, Ministry of Finance and Tonga Power Ltd.
