A multi-purpose training centre for the 120 people living on the small island of Lofanga in the Ha’apai Group was commissioned on Wednesday, 6 July, funded with $183,914 pa’anga under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security project.
Japan’s Ambassador HE Mr Yukio Numata said the centre will not only provide shelter in times of natural disasters but will provide space for awareness programs to empower the community and provide ample areas for activities enriching their daily lives.
“This centre represents so much more than a shelter for its people – resilience, refuge, strength and renewed hope for a bright future.”
The Governor of Ha’apai Mo’ale Finau thanked the Government of Japan for the assistance.
The old community center built in the 1970s was damaged by Tropical Cyclone Ian in 2014.
