Mate Ma’a Tonga were defeated 18 – 6 by Toa Samoa last night in a thrilling 2016 Pacific Test Match in Pirtek stadium in Parramatta, Sydney.
Mate Ma’a Tonga dominated possession (55%) throughout the match and were constantly within metres of the Samoan try line. However, a staunch Samoan defence and a high penalty rate (9 penalties to Samoa’s 4) prevented Tonga from scoring.
Mate Ma’a Tonga led early on in the match when winger Mosese Pangai scored a try after only 4 minutes into the game. Toa Samoa hit back with a try and penalty kick to lead at half time 8 – 6. Another two tries in the second half secured their lead to win 18 – 8.
Tongan halfback Samisoni Langi suffered a serious knee injury within the opening 10 minutes of the game. The injury has been confirmed as a potentially season-ending injury.
