A new multi-purpose training centre for Tonga Red Cross Society in Pangai, Ha'apai funded by the Japanese Government was handed over yesterday Wednesday, 30 March.
TRCS sought Japan’s assistance to rebuild its office on the outer island after it was destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Ian, in January 2014.
The hall including water tanks was funded with $200,664 pa’anga under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, while Japan’s Red Cross funded a toilet block and storage room.
Japanese Ambassador HE Mr Yukio Numata said the centre will become a key area for building resilient communities, while reinforcing the significance of TRCS humanitarian efforts to serve as early response to natural disasters.
“The center serves as a beacon of hope for Ha’apai through distribution of basic needs during natural disasters, training and outreach programs.”
Mo'ale Finau, Governor of Ha’apai thanked Japan for the generous assistance.
