Japan provides $3.6M to Tonga for help with purchases [1]

Japan yesterday agreed to commit $3.6 million pa'anga to Tonga to purchase goods, which may include sports equipment, to help promote economic and social development efforts.
Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva and H. E. Mr Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga formalized the agreement at a signing ceremony in Nuku'alofa on 28 March 2016.
H. E. Mr Numata said the grant would also support Tonga’s Strategic Development Framework to improve the quality of life for people living in Tonga.
“The Embassy of Japan recognizes that the sports equipment targeting the South Pacific Games that your government will host in 2019, are within the preliminary list presented by your Government”.
The goods to be purchased will be selected by a Committee with representatives from the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, the Embassy of Japan and the Procurement Agent, JICS or Japan International Cooperation System.
“The Committee has an important role in enhancing transparency and promoting effective and prompt utilization of the grant for people’s needs,” said Mr Numata.
