Two Israeli eye specialists, Dr Iris Moros and Dr Yair Elhalal were in Tonga conducting an on site ‘eye camp’ at Vaiola Hospital, Nuku‘alofa. During their stay from April 22 to May 1, they carried out 26 eye operations, and laser treatment of diabetes patients with eye problems, and looked at other needs of Tongan eye patients.
The clinic nurse Meleane Eke, who has run the Eye Unit at the Vaiola Hospital single-handed since the Tongan eye doctor resigned last year, said that the eye patients of Tonga, “are just managing with the good-will of overseas charity organisations”.
Meleane said that when the two Israelis left at the beginning of May, a Hawaiian eye team would arrive to continue the work.
