Shooting at Vaipua Bridge [1]

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with injuring two women whom he allegedly shot during a confrontation at Vaipua Bridge in Vava'u, early Saturday morning, 23 January.
Tonga Police this morning said one of the victims is currently in Ngu Hospital after sustaining serious injury, a gun shot wound to her right shoulder.
The other female victim who sustained minor injury when the bullet grazed her head, has been confirmed to have been released from hospital.
The shooting is said to have taken place at around 5:18am at the bridge during what is believed at this stage to have been a fight.
The accused who has been charged with possession of illegal firearms and grievous bodily, remains in custody to appear at the Vava'u Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 2 February.
The Tonga Police stated that the investigation was continuing.
Vaipua Bridge, which was opened in 2012 after reconstruction, provides a short cut from the capital Neiafu to Taoa and people living in the villages of the western district on the main island of Vava'u.
