Fiji will go to the polls in September 2002, Interim Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said at Mualevu village in Lau on September 4.
Fiji’s Daily Post reported that Government was working within a two-year time frame for a democratically elected Government.
Mr Qarase said the Commonwealth required Fiji to vigorously work towards a return to normalcy within two years. “As Prime Minister I’m optimistic we can achieve that,” Mr Qarase said.
The Great Council of Chiefs had given its blessing to the Terms of Reference to be used by the Constitutional Review Committee, he said, while appointing its seven nominees and the chairman, Professor Asesela Ravuvu. Government had also written to the National Federation Party and the Fiji Labour Party to each nominate two members for the CRC.
