New solar powered street lights were commissioned by Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala accompanied by Crown Princess Sinaitakala on the small island of Nomuka in Ha’apai on Thursday, 17 December.
The solar power street lights were provided as part of Chinese aid to address climate change in Tonga with 1500 lights being distributed to isolated islands like Nomuka.
Chin's Ambassador to Tonga, HE Huang said the street lights will be energy saving for remote islands, providing security and convenience for people’s daily life.
On December 9-10, China sent experts from the manufacturer working with the Tonga Government's MEIDECC to provide training for local technicians on the installation and maintenance of the lights.
The installations will continue in 2016.
