Two youths have been charged with disturbance in relation to a school brawl that broke out at the bus station in Nuku’alofa on Friday, 4 September.
Chief Superintendent Tevita Fifita said today the accused included a student enrolled in Tupou High School while the other was not a student.
He said they had been charged with causing disturbance and were expected to appear at the Nuku’alofa Magistrate’s Court this week.
It is alleged that a brawl between students in plain clothes from Liahona High School, ‘Apifo’ou College and Tonga College started at around 3:00-4:00pm at the bus station. The two accused are alleged to have been chasing down other boys when they were arrested.
Fifita said police had been informed beforehand that there was a fight planned to take place on the day. Officers were there and managed to prevent some of the disturbance. Prior to this, there had been other fights between students in the past few weeks.
School fights had died down over the last couple of months but recently this problem has re-surfaced with these recent happenings, said Fifita.
He said the Acting Minister of Education Hon ‘Etuate Lavulavu and school directors and principals have held numerous meetings to address this problem.
