A seven-year-old boy who was sleeping at home alone, died in a house fire last night at Haveluliku in Tongatapu.
Samuela Huni of the Tonga Fire Service said today the boy was reported to have been sleeping at home alone when the house caught on fire.
He said the incident was reported to the fire station in Lapaha at around 8:30pm but when firefighters got there nothing could be saved.
“The information I have received at this stage was that there a candle lit because the house had no electricity. The candle was reportedly put out before the family left for an event leaving the boy who was already asleep. Investigation continues to determine the cause of the fire,” he said.
This is the first death from a house fire in Tonga this year.
