Tonga’s new Police Commissioner Steven John Caldwell, began the top job today Monday 13 April in Nuku’alofa.
The New Zealander was sworn in this morning by Principal Magistrate Salesi Mafi witnessed by the Deputy Police Commissioner Viliami ‘Unga Fa’aoa, at the Police headquarters in Longolongo.
He had initially signed his contract of employment on Thursday, 9 April for three-years, which is open for renewal.
Commissioner Caldwell comes to Tonga after two-years as Contingent Leader for the New Zealand Police in Bougainville. Prior to this, he was New Zealand’s longest serving area commander in Marlborough for 17-years since 1996.
He replaces former Commissioner Grant O’Fee who retired in December last year after two and a half years of service.
The appointment of the Police Commissioner rests with the King in Council upon recommendation from a Judicial Appointments and Discipline Panel.
