The annual “Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing User Conference”opened today November 25 at the University of the South Pacific in Suva. Two hundred people are expected to attend the 3 day event.
The conference focuses on the latest Geospatial technologies to help assess the vulnerable landscapes of Pacific Island countries such as Tonga. The data would help better understand Tonga’s vulnerabilities against natural disasters such as sea level rising and tsunamis.
Tools discussed include: 3D modelling of Pacific Islands for coastal risk assessments, the re-surveying of changing coastal areas, support of developing a “Global Geodetic Reference Frame” (a global map that monitors changes to the Earth).
The theme of the 2014 Conference is “Empowering Pacific Communities through Improved Geospatial Data”
