The semi-finals of the Tongatapu Secondary Schools Rugby went ahead today, Friday 15 August at Teufaiva Stadium despite a game being stopped last week due to spectators fighting.
The two semi-finals of the 1st XV division were Lavengamalie vs 'Apifo'ou College, and Tonga College vs Tupou College.
The Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Salote Tonga said the game between 'Apifo'ou and Liahona High School held last week on Friday, 8 August was stopped after spectators fought at the grandstand.
“We have confirmed the fight erupted among spectators or people dressed in plain clothes. None of the students in school unifroms were involved in the fight,” she said.
Despite their concern over the fights the Police had a meeting with Secondary Schools Principals and decided to go ahead with the rugby season “since there is only the semi-final today and finals on Friday, 22 August before the rugby season ends,” she said.
“No one was arrested or charged last week because they fled quickly after the fight broke out. We have today dispatched our officers to watch the game today at the stadium,” the Acting Dep. Police Commissioner said.
It is understood a total of six games were held today, including younger rugby grades semi-finals such as Tupou High School and Tupou College Grade 3.
