Wednesday, August 6, 2014 - 17:59
HM King Tupou VI opened the first Royal Agricultural Show 2014 at the Matangimalie Grounds at Hihifo, Niuatoputapu this afternoon Wednesday, August 6.
The show is an opportunity for the people on the outer island to showcase their Tongan root crops, handicrafts and seafood. Organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries, the annual event is to encourage the development of the sectors and food security.
Ha’apai is not taking part this year as it is still recovering from the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Ian in January this year.
The King, accompanied by Queen Nanasipau'u, arrived at Mata'aho Airport on a new 17-seater Y-12 aircraft gifted to Tonga from China.
