Second trial for Fungavaka manslaughter starts next week [1]

A jury trial for the accused civilian Semisi Kalistiane Manu who faces manslaughter charges in relation to Kali Fungavaka’s death is expected to begin on Monday, May 12 at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.
A pre-trial conference will be held on Wednesday, May 7 to confirm the set date before Mr Justice Cato.
The accused who was in Cell 7 at the Nuku’alofa Police station when Kali was in custody on August 18, 2012, faces manslaughter with an alternative charge of grievous bodily harm.

Meanwhile, the trial of the five accused policemen that began on April 8 is expected to finish this week.
The counsel's oral submissions, which were to be given today was adjourned to tomorrow, May 6 since one of the defence counsel Siaosi Fifita fell ill.
Fifita is representing the accused constable Fatai Faletau. ‘Ofa Pouono acts for Salesi Maile, Tevita Vakalahi and Manu Tu’ivai, with Palu Taufateau for the accused Chief Inspector Kelepi Hala'ufia.
The Crown led by ‘Aminiasi Kefu ended its case last week on Thursday, May 1. The defence side decided not to call any witnesses to give evidence.
The accused policemen who were tried by judge alone have pleaded not guilty to manslaughter with the alternative charge of grievous bodily harm.
