The public swimming pool, on the Nuku'alofa seafront at Popua will remain close to the public indefinitely, according to Mosese Lavemai, the General Manager of the Ports Authority Tonga.
Mosese said today that they closed off the pool to the public early this year because they had plans to upgrade the facility, including the construction of a second outlet to improve the flow of seawater in and out of the pool.
He said at this stage those plans are put on hold because the Board of the Ports Authority has since received a proposal from the Tonga Swimming Association to take over the management of the pool, and use it for the training of swimmers in preparation for upcoming South Pacific Games.
