The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is weeding out corruption from its development projects, barring any firm or individual it believes is cheating development projects.
An ADB anti-corruption report released last week stated that in 2013 it sanctioned 31 firms and 30 individuals from its development projects after investigating complaints.
According to the ADB’s Office of Anticorruption & Integrity (OAI), in 2013 it received 250 complaints related to ADB financed, supported or administered activities in 26 countries.
Almost half these complaints (115) came from ADB staff, 123 came from external sources, three from audits and nine from anonymous sources. Some 84% of the complaints came via email.
“Fraud related to work experience, qualifications, and technical and financial capacities of consulting firms or consultants continues to be the most common type of integrity violation reported to OAI” the report stated.
It added that “…ADB President Takehiko Nakao stressed to staff the need for collective action against corruption so that ADB can make a difference for the benefit of the people it serves.”
