Tropical Cyclone Tuni moves to east of Niuatoputapu

A tropical depression that has developed overnight into category 1 Tropical Cyclone Tuni is moving to the east of Niuatoputapu. Continuing Tropical Cyclone advisories are being issued today by Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre.

A Tropical Cyclone warning

A gale warning remains inforce for Niuatoputapu.

A strong wind warnings remains inforce for Niuafo’ou, Vava'u, Ha'apai, Tongatapu and 'Eua.

A heavy rain warning remains inforce for Niuatoputapu.

A gale warning remains inforce for all Tonga waters.

A heavy damaging swell warning remains inforce for all Tonga waters.

Situation:

Tropical Cyclone Tuni (993hpa) was located 15 decimal 0 south, 173 decimal 0 west or 135km northeast of Niuatoputapu at 08:00am this morning. Tropical Cyclone Tuni has estimated winds of 65km/hr near its centre and Is currently moving southeast at 10km/hr.

On its current track Tropical Cyclone Tuni is expected to lie 180km east of Niuatoputapu at 07:00pm this evening.

For Niuatoputapu:

Expect damaging gale force winds 55-75km/hr with momentary gusts up to 95km/hr.

Overcast with occassional rain, heavy at times with squally thunderstorms.

Flash flooding in low-lying areas.

High seas with damaging heavy southeast swells developing today.

For the rest of Tonga:

East to southeast winds 55-65km/hr with gust up to 75km/hr, especially in Niuafo’ou and Vava’u,

Cloudy with scattered showers,

Rough to very rough seas. A heavy damaging southeast swell.
