100m Gold completes medal sweep for Tonga's Special Olympians

A Gold medal won by 100m sprinter Tomasi Ma’asi at the Special Olympics World Summer Games, brings Tonga's medal tally to five. Every member of the team won a medal in the Games that ended on 2 August in Los Angeles, USA.

Tomasi’s outstanding performance added Gold to the bronze medal he won in the 200m run.

The other three athletes in Tonga's team won a medal each at the Games.

Vanessa Heleta the Director of Tonga’s Special Olympic Association was elated that all four of the athletes won medals to take home and had experienced the spirit of the Special Olympics. “It's all about acceptance and inclusiveness," she said.

More than 6,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 165 nations competed in the Special Olympics  from July 25 to August 2.

Tonga's medalists:

  •     Tomasi Ma’asi, Gold medal 100m sprint and Bronze medal 200m run
  •     Tutaleva Fehoko, Silver medal 50m sprint
  •     Tevita Tilini, Silver medal men’s mini javelin
  •     Fane Helu, Bronze medal, women’s shot put
