Beggars are menace of Nuku'alofa

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Editior

I bring your attention to this problem that we have in our beautiful country, these group of men who beg or penipeni people on the streets of Nuku'aolfa are becoming a real menace to society and since the town is returning to the CBD its giving our town a very bad image.

Most of these guys are between the ages 40 to 60 year olds, these people beg for money to buy alcohol and they are drunk 90% of the time, they swear at people and each other and always pestering people who are hardworking and don't have the money to be drunk all day. They always chase the palangi people for money or just harass them.

The police and NGOs should seriously look into this problem now otherwise it is going to get worse. People are feeling very uneasy when they come to town because of these drunkards. They should be given some kind of community work to do to keep them busy.

I hope that someone in the right authority will seriously look into this.
