Nuku‘alofa, Tonga : FROM OUR ARCHIVES 2000. "It seems to me that the whole approach to life in the Pacific Islands forever sails very closely to what we refer to as ethnicity, which is the way anthropologists and paternalistic aid donors forgive our basic racism....Another example nearer home was the racially motivated and cowardly violence, which young jobless, and dare I say it, hopeless Tongans, visited on our Chinese owned shops last year; an act of such barbarity that it shamed and disgusted me and every other Tongan of my generation...." Nuku‘alofa, Tonga : The swinging sixties came to life with the visiting Tuggerah Lakes Show Band from Australia, at the ‘Apifo’ou College Hall in, Nuku‘alofa, on June 14. Austin Powers look-alike, Paul Boden, and his bird, Kate Cosgrove, won two bottles of wine and t-shirts for the best dressed couple from the ‘60s era. Nuku'alofa, Tonga : (From our archives, March 2000). Millennium interview with Baron Vaea. When King Taufa‘ahau Tupou IV finally accepted the resignation of Tonga’s 78-year-old Prime Minister, Hon. Baron Vaea, on December 3, 1999, it ended another intriguing saga of Tongan politics. Strange as it may sound, this was the case of a Prime Minister who had wanted to retire and go home after serving five decades in the public service—but he was not allowed to. When he finally agreed to our interview, on January 11, it was obvious why this overworked man had insisted on retirement. Baron Vaea was one exhausted person.
